The use of daily prayers to mark the time of the day is found in the ancient practices of both Judaism and Christianity. The Daily Office of Evensong marks the end of the day and gives thanks for Christ, the Light of the World. Originally derived from the Jewish blessing of light after the close of the Sabbath feast, Evensong is characterized by the symbols and imagery of light. The Office includes prayers, a selection from the Psalter, readings from the Holy Scriptures and canticles (music whose text is biblical but not from the Psalter). The Office is referred to as Choral Evensong when more elaborate settings of the liturgy are sung by the choir.
Evensong is a service of reflection – of leaving oneself open that God may speak to us through this beautiful and ancient liturgy. We invite you to come and allow the voice of God to speak through the beauty of language and music.
